Defense First Approach

New students often rush to learn every YouTube and Instagram submission without understanding what fundamentals are.

Typically, the most successful long-term students learn early the importance of defense. You learn the consequence of grips and the use of movement. You'll learn how to conserve energy and the development of your offensive style will emerge much sooner.

The “Defense First” Approach

Time is Your Most Valuable Asset:

Learning offense without learning how to get to the spot to finish the submission is a distraction and time-waster. The sooner you make defense your focus the less you'll regret it.

✔ Prioritize What Matters:

As a new student, defense should be your priority! This helps you focus on what truly advances your goals - self-defense.  You'll soon see rather than reacting to everything that happens "to you" you can control what happens "for you".

✔ Defensive Habits Lead to Success:

Learning to be defensively responsible will make your Jiu-Jitsu journey much more fun. Your ability to manage distance, space and the clinch will dictate what happens "to you or for you." The way you manage this skill will help you succeed faster than the fellow student who focuses on Instagram moves.

As new students begin their Jiu-Jitsu journey the practicing of a "defense first" mindset should be your foundation. By prioritizing this you will learn faster and last longer.  Be unpinnable and unpassable and things become much easier!
